Children Earache

Earache (Acute Otitis Media)

Earache, often caused by a condition called Acute Otitis Media (AOM), is a common and painful infection of the middle ear. It can affect people of all ages but is especially common in children. At our pharmacies in Lowdham and Calverton, we’re here to provide expert advice and support through the NHS Pharmacy First scheme, offering care for children aged 1 to 17 years.

What Causes Earache?

Acute Otitis Media is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection. It often develops after a cold, flu, or upper respiratory tract infection when the tubes connecting the throat to the middle ear (eustachian tubes) become blocked or inflamed. This blockage can trap fluid in the middle ear, creating an ideal environment for germs to grow.

Common Causes Include:

  • Colds and flu
  • Allergies
  • Sinus infections
  • Exposure to cigarette smoke
  • Bottle feeding while lying flat (in infants)

Symptoms of Earache (AOM)

Symptoms can vary depending on age, but common signs include:

  • Ear pain, which may worsen when lying down
  • Hearing problems or a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Fever
  • Fluid or pus draining from the ear
  • Irritability or difficulty sleeping (especially in children)
  • Tugging or pulling at the ear (common in young children)

In some cases, the symptoms may improve on their own within a few days. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, it’s important to seek professional advice.

When to Call for Help

You should seek immediate help if:

  • The pain is severe or worsening
  • There is fluid, pus, or blood coming from the ear
  • Your child has a high fever or seems very unwell
  • Symptoms persist for more than 3 days
  • Your child shows signs of hearing loss

At both our Lowdham and Calverton pharmacies, our trained pharmacy teams can assess earache symptoms and provide appropriate advice and treatment. Under the NHS Pharmacy First scheme, we can offer expert help for children aged 1 to 17 years without the need for a GP appointment.
